We began with a group session to develop our initial ideas and concepts for the pitch. It was interesting to see how the different disciplines of the people in the room shaped the ideas that we came up with.
Our first concept was the idea of a 90s horror film, almost like Buffy – this lead us to think about a high-school setting or a prom theme. We started to discuss the possible plot of the prom video. At first the idea would be that Cassandra was a teacher in a high school, and Matt’s ex. It was a rom-com theme with the guys playing on stage at the prom and eventually Matt would see Cassandra in the crowd and try to get her back.
We reconsidered the prom theme when we considered the practicality of the shoot – we were making a no-budget music promo, so it would be nigh on impossible to source and secure all the required costumes, props and locations on the days we needed. It also didn’t really fit the song or the band that well, and left Stef out. Instead we came up with the idea of the guys jamming in a flat while waiting on their friend Andy – Andy would then turn out to be in the flat dressed as his drag alter-ego Cassandra. This would be revealed gradually in the video between band shots.
I contributed some ideas in the planning stages, though I didn’t really do much else for pre-production. I was also absent for the actual pitch session, so I don’t have a full sense of what that was like, though I heard the band responded well. In retrospect I should have had a more hands-on approach and maybe asked more questions about the process and how everything was working.
